Busted! Don’t Believe These Exercise Myths!

When it comes to fitness and exercise, there are many different opinions on how to approach your journey. Finding the type of workout program that suits your body can get overwhelming. Moreover, you may also be swayed by the many misconceptions related to exercise.

Unfortunately, believing these myths could have an adverse impact on your fitness and health. To help you separate fact from fiction and reap the benefits of exercise, Connie Girardin at CG Training has debunked three of the most widely believed myths about exercise.

Myth 1: You need a lot of time to get a good workout in.
The thought behind this myth is is that you have to work out a ton of hours to get results. If I have clients asking me about this, I inform them that it is important to exercise often, but it does not have to be all-consuming if it is a productive and effective exercise. At CG Training, I encourage my clients to exercise often. I offer 30 and 60 Minute Training sessions for people on a schedule as well as 30 and 60-minute classes for convenience for drop-ins.

Myth 2: If women lift heavy weights, they will bulk up like a man.
This myth exists because there are women bodybuilders and fitness models who have big muscles because they lift heavy on purpose. Having worked in the fitness industry for years, the most prevailing myth that I hear is that women don’t want to lift heavy because they don’t want to bulk up. I correct my clients right away and tell them that lifting heavier weights will not make them bulk up. That is because that is not what program we are doing. I set up a program according to what my client wants to achieve, and unless that is a bodybuilder, we don’t do super heavyweights. This way, we can gain some beautiful muscle and burn body fat to help my client trim down and look pleasing. On a side note, women do not have enough testosterone to get really built unless they are taking supplements.

Myth 3: You need a gym membership to get in shape.
Most people think that you need all this expensive equipment and cardio machines or else you can’t get a good workout. There are so many workouts that can be done at home or outside that require little to no equipment. You can get a starter set of 3, 5, and 8lb weights, a mat, a ball, and maybe a few resistance bands, and this is enough to work your whole body. Take your workout outside and walk, run, ride your bike, or go rollerblading. There are plenty of options. I always offer lots of options for my clients with regard to cardio and weights. I show them how to combine them properly for a more intense workout that requires less time. If someone has equipment at their house, I also travel there and show them what to do with what they have.
