Group Fitness Classes Vs. Personal Training

When it comes to physical training with a professional, you have two options. Either you can train with a group or acquire personal fitness training. However, as each training option is different, their impact on your body and lifestyle is also different. If you haven’t tried either form of training before, you may find it challenging to see how each method stacks up against the other. To show you how each method stacks up, CG Training has compared group fitness classes vs. personal training below. Keep reading to see which option is better for you based on your needs.

1. Group fitness classes

Group classes are a more affordable fitness training option as the cost of each session is shared with others in the class. Another advantage is that you’re working out with others that may be at the same level as you or like-minded. You can create new friendships with these people as your workout buddies. This should help you keep each other motivated with your progress or results. Group classes also do not require you to bring any equipment with you. It is usually provided at the fitness center where your group meets for class.

The primary disadvantage of group classes is that they are set at a specific time, and you need to prepare your schedule accordingly to be a part of these classes. During the classes, the group is treated as one unit, so no one on one attention is provided by the instructor. They will do their best to watch everybody. But they may miss instances where you might be executing an exercise improperly, or they may fail to see that you are struggling with an exercise due to physical limitations. Another drawback could be that the class size restriction does not allow you to exercise as much as you need to, and you may not have any equipment to exercise at home.

2. Personal training

The most significant advantage of personal training is that you can come in with no experience and learn how to properly exercise your specific needs. You can schedule your training appointments when it’s convenient for your schedule. A personal trainer will adjust to your timings and ensure that they are available to you at the location of your choice. Before setting up your personal training program, the trainer will assess you to determine the best course of action to achieve your goals. Accordingly, a training plan will be set up, and as you progress, the trainer will keep you moving forward, help you get stronger, and stay motivated.

The primary disadvantage of personal training is the cost of this program. You have to really decide if the training cost is worth it and you absolutely need it to maintain your health. Based on this, you can determine how affordable it is for you. If possible, try to get a training partner capable of making sessions cheaper for both of you. Perhaps they can offer fewer or shorter sessions. You could also agree to come to them for your training as this can reduce your costs drastically. Another challenge with personal training is that if the trainer does not have time to accommodate you, you need to find a different trainer. Similarly, if you have to cancel your session at the last minute and the instructor is not flexible with scheduling, you could lose a session.

Bottom line

Now that you have a clear understanding of the pros and cons of both training methods, you should find it easier to choose between the two. Group classes will suit you if you are an experienced and knowledgeable exerciser who wants variety in your workouts. If you are not an experienced athlete or exerciser, a group instructor won’t offer you the attention you require to exercise safely. In this case, private sessions are far more suitable. Similarly, if you don’t like crowds and work better in a more focused one on one environment, personal training sessions are ideal for you.

In case you’re still undecided, understand that either option is great as long as you are doing something and being active. If you have a specific goal or health issue, it will benefit you to take the personal training route. If not, a group class will meet your needs perfectly.
